This Weekend in Cambridge September 18-19

The fall season brings quite a few events to the Cambridge area. This weekend you can take a tour of history at the Mount Auburn Cemetery or participate in the 7th Annual RiverSing Celebration on the Charles River.  The clock is ticking on outdoor events that don’t involve skiing or ice skating.  Both these events are family friendly and relatively cheap.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Cambridge that features elaborate landscaping and architecture.  Though it is still a functioning active cemetery it also is a national landmark.   This historic cemetery/park can be toured and September is the final chance of the summer season to tour it in relative warmth.  This Saturday they will hold  one of their normal tours “Discover Mount Auburn Cemetery”.  It is only $10 for the 1.5 mile tour but if you are a member you only pay $5.  My family and I have gone on this tour that features stories about the history of both the monuments and some of the more notable people that are buried there.  You also have the option of touring the cemetery for free on your own.  They also put on a variety of other themed tours and events throughout the year.  Check their calendar for updates.

Cambridge RiverSing is actually free and is run by the Revels organization and sponsored by the Charles River Conservancy.  We posted about Riversing last year and included some videos that were a documentary about Riversing that was posted by the Charles River Conservancy.  If you are not familiar with it I highly recommend view the videos here.  The event includes activities for the kids prior to the walk/parade over to the Charles River where the singing takes place.  Visit the Revels website for both more information and to download lyrics of the songs that will be sung.
