The Social Network Hits Cambridge
Is The Social Network the “real” story on the beginnings of Facebook? Most film goers are not going to care. Let’s be honest, if you are at all interested in business or technology odds are you want to see this movie. If you like Justin Timberlake you might see the movie for that reason too. It has already been widely publicized that there have been some liberties taken with the “facts” by the film makers.
Having our own Harvard as the backdrop to the beginning of such a widely phenomenal business story like Facebook of course is a plus for those of us in the Cambridge area. I for one am looking forward to seeing something of Cambridge in the background. The truth is that many of the scenes were filmed at John Hopkins in Maryland so we will see if there is anything familiar in this partially filmed in the Boston area movie.
Ben Mezrich the author of the non-fiction book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, At Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal is also a local pull for the movie since he is said to currently live in Boston. His most well-known claim to fame is also a Cambridge based non fiction work Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions. This MIT story was made into the movie 21 with Kevin Spacey.
The current buzz on The Social Network is more than favorable question is can it live up to the hype. The favorable reviews may have been based on a low expectation for the film, time will tell. The movie officially opens this Friday October 1st.
Here is the trailer for the Social Network, maybe you will be the next Mark Zuckerberg…after this movie I don’t know…
