Amy Poehler kicks off Memorial Day Weekend
Harvard Magazine was nice enough to tape Amy Poehler’s speech at Harvard College Class Day. Her speech was both funny and insightful. Commencements and Memorial Day tend to be more serious but her speech actually made me realize that we live in a challenging world but that makes it even more important to be able to laugh at yourself.
Of course today’s commencement speaker Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is the serious counterpoint that also must frame our world. Harvard’s graduation is typically the last if not one of the last commencement ceremonies in the area along with neighboring MIT and therefore falls near Memorial Day.
Memorial Day in the Cambridge area usually involved the parade that ends at the Cambridge Common. Details on the Cambridge 2011 Memorial Day Parade can be found here. I would not be surprised to find families of the Harvard graduates making a weekend of their trips here. There is plenty to do of course in the Cambridge area including exploring our wonderful Harvard Square. Memorial Drive will also be closed this Sunday and with the weather finally turning it will be a great time to exercise or stroll on the Charles River.
Enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend! Be safe!
I had to include Amy Poehler’s speech. I am a sucker for Commencement/Graduation speeches because you can always glean some wisdom from them that will help you through the challenges of life…
